The OPALCO Hole Deepens

By Alex Macleod

As 2016 begins, and yet another OPALCO rate hike kicks in, it is worth looking back at 2015 to see how OPALCO's go-it-alone Internet business is doing.

For starters, Rock Island Communications has blown through nearly $5 million of what was to be a three-year, $7.5 million "startup" loan from OPALCO. And what does it have to show for it? As of its December report...

Offended by Broadband story

By Michael Baker

I was offended by the info-mercial you called a news story on Broadband in the Islands. I've been using fiber optic-based broadband at my home on Orcas Island since the turn of the centry...

A Curious Little Development at Opalco

By Alex Macleod

There is a move afoot to change OPALCO's By-Laws to restructure the board so its membership reflects the population of each island.

There is nothing especially novel about the idea: it has, at various times, been pushed for the county council, for instance.

What makes this more interesting is...

Power Bill Increase

By Ingrid Fabianson

I wish to address our Orcas Power and Light Cooperative members. Perhaps you too have noticed that your bill is considerably higher than last year (mine is $100 higher and I didn't use that much power) and that your annual return of "profits" was cut in...

OPALCO: suggestion for itemized billing

By Larry Weingarth

OPALCO's recent billing states that it will include a new line item of "demand charge" (whatever that is). I have a different billing request. I recommend that the statement include a line which reflects the monthly...

Rock Island Pitches Fiber Optics to Eastsound Business Core

By Margie Doyle

Dan Burke, Rock Island Communication’s Vice President of Sales and Marketing, announced to Eastsound Property owners a plan earlier this month, “to bring fiber optic Internet to downtown Eastsound…to get better...

Huge Increase in OPALCO Debt Tells the Story

By Alex MacLeod

Tracking the financial hole that OPALCO has been digging for itself, and which is resulting in significant rate increases for its electric customer/members, can be daunting.

If you listen to OPALCO management and its board, rates have been rising so rapidly because...

When is a co-op not a co-op?

By Gabriel Jacobs

OPALCO was formed as a cooperative to provide electricity. Recently OPALCO has gotten into business with T Moblie without ever consulting the membership about its changes of purpose. I have learned from my time talking with OPALCO board members and attending OPALCO board meetings that they have no intention of...

Where Has OPALCO’s Credibility Gone?

By Tom Owens

OPALCO was formed as a cooperative to provide electricity. Recently OPALCO has gotten into business with T Moblie without ever consulting the membership about its changes of purpose. I have learned from my time talking with OPALCO board members and attending OPALCO board meetings that they have no intention of...

Concerns About OPALCO

By Richard Demers

I am writing about the recent sequence of rate increases related to the delivery of electrical power supplied by the Orcas Power and Light Cooperative. I am a summer resident on Blakely Island and our electrical power is supplied by OPALCO. In the past we have disconnected our power in the fall for the winter season and then would have it reconnected in May for the summer.

It is my opinion the OPALCO is manipulating...

OPALCO's Current Take on "Cooperative"

By Alex MacLeod

It is increasingly difficult to remember that the “C” in OPALCO stands for “cooperative.” No one is having a harder time doing so than its management and board of directors.

Remember when the annual meetings allowed for members to stand up and ask questions of management and the board? That ended nearly three years ago, as the board was morphing OPALCO from an electric cooperative to a broadband/Internet business. In response to a question

It's Time for Fresh OPALCO Leadership

By Alex MacLeod

There are some things worth thinking about as we cast ballots in the next few weeks for the three open positions on the OPALCO Board of Directors.

The first are the 25-30% rate increases the board has approved since OPALCO decided to enter the Internet/broadband business,

Another is the way the board and management have shed the values of a cooperative...

OPALCO– What's in a Name?

By Sandy Bishop

If you spend time on OPALCO's website you will find they are proud to be a locally-owned and operated non-profit co-op. The website reminds us that we are not just members, but member-owners of OPALCO. We have the rights and responsibility to elect the board of directors who...
