Make OPALCO Power Affordable Again.

OPALCO and Rockisland

By Robert Harrison

April 24, 2016

On Friday, April 15th Gerry Lawlor, EVP of Rock Island Communications sent out an e-mail to the entire Rock Island mailing list endorsing candidates including the two incumbents for the OPALCO board. This was completely inappropriate. Due to public outcry, a retraction was posted on Lopezrocks and Foster Hildreth, GM of both Rock Island and OPALCO, stated that the same retraction would be emailed to all those who received the original endorsement.

However, as I have been talking with community members this week, I have yet to hear from a single person, aside from those who wrote letters of complaint, who received the retraction. I have sent two e-mails to Foster about this issue and have not received a response.

This further reinforces my belief in a need for a change in the leadership of the OPALCO board. Please make sure to vote! There are only six days left. In the past, OPALCO board elections have generally only had a 20% turnout, so every person who casts a vote really matters.

One of the great things about OPALCO is that it is a coop! Which means that everyone who gets electricity from them is a member and gets a vote (basically everyone in the county). If you are a member, you should have received a ballot in the mail by now. It is also possible to vote at the annual meeting next Saturday.

We have three good candidates running for the two Lopez positions: Lauren Stephens, Dwight Lewis, and Brian Silverstein.

We get to vote for Shaw too, and have an excellent choice in Gabriel Jacobs. He is for transparency, lowering rates and returning to the values of a coop.

I also highly recommend voting NO on the proposed amendment. It will allow for costly redistribution of representation and further allow the board to manipulate the membership.

Make OPALCO Power Affordable Again.

Write in Dwight Lewis on the Ballot.

Don't vote On-line.

See "Write-in Ballot" for example
